The fashion and beauty industries need to step up and represent diversity in society in all its beautiful forms. Ultimately the purpose of these industries it to provide for consumers and by only using models that represent a tiny portion of people the masses are left feeling isolated, unrepresented and unattractive. Studies have shown that 90% of people do not feel represented in the media, and the pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by these industries is at an all-time high. For example, did you know that The WHO has stated that as much as 15% of the world are disabled? Sadly lack of representation means that 15% of fashion models are not!
MOD is committed to promoting inclusivity and ensuring that the models featured in these industries are representative of real people of all races, ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities.
MOD hosts its own events to highlight the issue, such as the recent 2023 British Fashion Council London Fashion Week Show as well as working side by side with those brands willing to incorporate diversity in their campaigns to raise awareness. We also actively promote a more diverse range of models through media and social networking to encourage greater representation of all individuals.
Our efforts do not stop there! We offer a range of workshops to combat lack of diversity and self esteem issues. Recognizing the lack of diverse models available we offer Modelling Workshops to help those diverse people interested, learnt the ropes in the industry and develop the confidence to apply for castings and shoots. The purpose behind our Confidence Workshops is to counteract the negative self-esteem and distorted self-image that many individuals have about their physical appearance and beauty, perpetuated by the media, beauty and fashion industries. We run these workshops to encourage those with low self esteem discover their inner confidence and recognize their individual and very unique beauty. Very often those who need help the most are the least represented, which often means those from marginalised groups such as plus size, from ethnic minorities or perhaps with a physical disability or difference.
MOD has amassed an incredible amount of press coverage and media interest over the last 15 years of disrupting the fashion and beauty industry! Here you can see images from our first ever protest outside London Fashion Week over 15 years ago! Led by Founder and CEO Angel Sinclair MOD supporters gathered to disrupt London Fashion Week and to encourage diversity on the runway, discouraging the use of overtly underweight models who were suffering to be thin enough for fashion.
